Bike Ride

I am flying south through
The night and light rain past
Thomas Jefferson H.S.
To see her again,
We began to meet in the
Fall when it was not so cold.
After 10 pm I would stand by her
Bedroom window and talk,
On cold nights that winter
She would sneak me into
Her bed and we would
Lie in our clothes and
Whisper for hours,
Later without the clothes,
Under the blanket to
Keep warm and embrace.
We hear someone
Coming down the hallway
And I slip quietly off the
Bed onto the floor away
From the door and
A knock and her
Mother stands in
Her doorway and
Asks if she is all right.
She says she thinks
She is getting her
Period and has cramps,
I marvel at how well
She lies and with
Such conviction,
Later we embrace
More quietly and
Just before the dawn
I peddle home hoping
All are still asleep and
I can creep into bed
Undetected.
Fall, winter and spring
We meet and share
Ourselves in secret.
We are both seniors
In H.S. and eager
For trouble.
