Fidus
When we are young
We are preoccupied
With fidelity,
Equally so when we
Are old and able to
See the forest for
The indiscretions.
The concept of fidelity
Is dear to us,
We cherish the idea
Even when we fail
To adhere to the rule.
I think it works best
If we practice fidus
Rather than give
Lip service only.
So difficult to hide
An indiscretion,
Better to avoid the
Inconvenience of lying
For the pleasure of
Laying with another.
Fidus lives in the heart,
Not the head.
Forsaking all others
Is not an idle phrase,
But an expression of
The heart’s desire
For reassurance
Against betrayal
And abandonment.
Listen to the heart
Not the head,
And you will
Find happiness rather
Than purloined passion.
Passion in love is
Better than passion
For the sake
Of passion.
The former lasts,
The latter lingers
Then fades.
