What a Friend
What a friend we have in Jesus,
I sang that song each Sunday
For years but could never
Quite square the idea of
Faith over reason or the
Mistake of making eternal
Life superior to his teachings
About love and forgiveness
And his rejection of wealth
And whipping the money
Changers from the Temple.
The trinitarian Jesus always
Seemed to me too much like
Santa Claus or the
Easter bunny,
Something we outgrew
With age and experience.
I always felt Jesus was my
Friend because of his
Divine message and not
In faith in exchange for
Salvation as eternal life as me.
How boring to be me for
Eternity and what about my dog?
But I can see it is better to
Have faith than not,
And recognize the social
Benefits of trinitarianism,
Though I prefer
Unitarianism, Jesus
As a great prophet
And a radical rabbi.
But who am I?
Nobody. But
I say my prayers each night
To the Universe and thank
The Universal God that
Is the Universe for
The symmetry
Behind the
Chaos.
