Easter

I am nine sitting at
The dinner table
With my family
Eating supper
And talking,
A custom now
Forgotten.
Easter is close
And we discuss
What each will
Wear to Church
And how to dye
Easter eggs,
I ask why eggs are
Associated with
Easter time.
My elder sister
Penny who is 14,
Dismissively tells
Me it is because
Rabbits lay eggs.
My father looks
Over to my mother
And asks her when
She is going to talk
With Penny about
Things gaining the
Curiosity of all my sibs.
I announce that rabbits
Are mammals and
Therefore do not lay eggs.
Penny already senses thin
Ice and says nothing but
I push on about mammals
Nursing their young but
Am ignored by all,
Probably the safest thing.
Easter is a success as the
Ladies dress up to be seen
And us kids get Easter candy.
I do remark about the lack
Of attention to the religious
Aspects but am shushed,
Again, probably the safest thing.
Since learning to read using the
Iliad, Greek and later Norse lore,
I am a bit of a child pedant and
Annoying to pretty much all.
Both a lack of knowledge and a
Surfeit of it are socially gauche.
Still, Easter is a big success
And our haul of candy lasts
Many days though I never cared
For the eggs, Easter or not.
