Two Pines

Two pine trees
With startlingly
Long needles
Grow in Carol’s
Backyard grown
Higher even than
The two-story house,
They give both privacy
And morning shade from
The houses and sun rising
To the east spreading over the
Backyard full of flowers and
Smaller trees, bushes,
Shrubs, and two
Cats both
Black
And white
Plus one red dog
Carol and now
Me sitting
In the
Cool
Shade and
Gentle breeze
Of dry air scented
With flowers and all the
Scents of a Mediterranean
Climate strange to me
To now call home
So unlike the
Bay areas
East and
West
Where colder
Winds prevail toggled
With humid heat or
Pacific fogs and
A colder sun
Than here
In San
Diego.
The scent
Of pine drifts
Through the open
Windows of the house
Where I now live
Snug with
Rosy the
Dog
Who has
Taken to me
Sleeping at and on
My feet trying to sleep
Between us if we
Will only allow,
Which we
Do not.
Rosy
Patrols
The house
Each night and
Returns mornings
To wish us good
Day and urge
Us to rise
And feed
Her.
