Oklahoma

I am in my 50s
Driving with my wife
Across Oklahoma when
We stop for lunch at a cafe
That seems comfortably local,
Mostly empty but OK to have some
Burgers fries and cold iced tea.
An elderly lady and two gents
Of similar age come in and
Sit at a table next to ours
In the empty cafe deeply
Enjoying their gossip.
The lady asks her
Two friends in a
Voice we can
Plainly hear
Why God
Didn’t
Make Jesus
Born in Oklahoma?
My wife and I exchanged
A smile as the two old gents
Said they did not know,
The dowager lady
Replied that God
Could not find
In Oklahoma
Three wise
Men or a
Virgin.
They all
Laughed
As did my wife
And I as we all began
To talk about life but
Noting the lady and
Her friends had got
Rights to the cafe
As sooners to
Our boomers
But welcome
Anyway for
An hour’s
Chat and
Laugh.
Traveling
The back roads
Of America is the
Greatest pleasure
Any traveler could hope
To find going down the road
At the end of a long drive
Looking for friends
Both old and
New.
