I am 30 teaching
At ACC which is the
New community college
Where after a few years I
Ask to teach at the east
Austin ghetto campus
To cure my prejudice
After failing to find
A full-time college
Teaching job at
A four year
University
And too
Tempted
To scape
Goat by gender
Or ethnicity by face to
Face contact with reality
Which results in finding
My classes mostly a
Mix with mostly
Black students
And some Hispanics
Plus a handful of whites.
I am invited by my
Students to all
Manner of
Picnics
Weddings
Church events,
And one young
Black coed told me
The blackest berry has
The sweetest juice, to
Which I reply saying
I was not allowed
To hear that but
Was honored
By her kind
Offer but
ACC
Would fire
Me for such
Conduct and
Thanked her for
The kindly
Thought.
She was
Quiet beautiful.
My black students
Made me feel welcome
And cured my scape
Goating after a
Few years
Of the
Taste of
Reality.
Half a
Century
Later Ancestry
23 informed me I
Was one percent African,
From all over Africa but
Mostly sub-Saharan
West Africa,
True dat.
