Pain
I am seven in
Southern Illinois
Lying on a cot set
Up in the dining room
Which is adjacent to the
Family room kitchen hallway,
I am moaning in pain from an ear
Infection and relatively out of the
Way but easily checked on yet
Just out of earshot as I am
Especially annoying when
Sick and there are things
That must be done
And I will heal in
Time or not but
That is the
Lesson
I learn,
Just
Get over
It or else try
To embrace the
Pain as a new lifestyle
Which would be unpleasant
As it is harder when annoying
To accrue affection admiration
And positive attention which
All humans crave but can
Rot into a search for
Adoration which is
Seldom if ever
Found and
Then at
Great
Cost
So
I get well
And since then
Have survived more
Pain than most people
Under 60 can imagine
Though others have
Endured worse we
Survivors share
A resolution to
Just get over
It when the
Pain grows
Dull and
We go
On
With life.
If time does
Not heal all our
Wounds it at
Least dulls
The pain,
We can
Always
Run
Down to
The corner
Deli for a ham
And Swiss on rye
Toasted brown mustard
With a few chips
And a kosher
Dill pickle
Slice.
