Watercolor

My wife and I
Have spent several
Days at the O’Keefe gallery
In Santa Fe and are driving toward
A mountain town northeast of
El Paso when we find an
Isolated gallery where
We find a watercolor
By Peter Hurd and
Have Mexican
Food with
Michael
Hurd
His son
Who sells
Us the John Hurd
Watercolor of Ascencion
Island, Mars Bay, as
Painted from inside
A WW2 bomber
Circling to land
Flying across
The South
Atlantic.
How
Strange
To posses
Such a treasure
From an artist who
Frequented O’Keefe’s
Desert ghost ranch
Privy to her genius,
How tedious it
Must have
Been to
Pay
Court
To a better
Artist when Hurd
Was so gifted
Himself, I do
Wonder if
His father-in-law
Wyeth ever teased
Him or at least
Whispered it
To Hurd’s
Wife
Wyeth’s daughter.
As merely a talented
But far from gifted
Artist myself I do
Know something
Of how Hurd
Must have
Felt much
I think
As Michael
Hurd must feel
Though I do appreciate
The chips salsa and enchilada.
