Look II
I am in my 60s
On a cruise ship
Far out to sea in the
Lido at a window table
Sipping tea reading when
A couple sit down at the next
Table to watch the waves birds
Clouds and peruse future cruise
Materials when I happen to look up
And notice the woman staring at
Me while her companion reads
The cruise materials so when
I look up next her eyes rise
To return my glance and
She smiles so I smile
Back then we look
Away but as she
And her friend
Are leaving
She looks
Me in the
Eye and
Softly
Says,
“You have
A nice smile.”
I smile back but
She has walked on
Before I can speak but
Over the next weeks at sea
From port to port we smile again
In passing or the Lido or dinner
Never speaking but both of
Us are aware of the other
Both interested but not
Able to do more than
Smile though as our
Encounters seem
Too frequent for
Coincidence
We each
Begin
To smile
And laugh
Since chance
Seems to throw us
Together some way every
Day and even now I half expect
To run into her again at a cafe
Since Coincidence has a way
Of overcoming the odds
Even if only with an
Accidental look
And a smile.
