If Not

I am older
Into my 30s
Married kids
We exchange
Looks and comments
As we watch Frasier re-runs
And I think if not here then where,
Not a good moment for romantic
Illusion but common sense is
A safer path to happiness
Than gossamer dreams
Of perfection between
Humans trained since
Childhood to size up
Our opportunities
And take what
Affection we
Can where
We can
When
The heart
Yearns not
To be alone
Wanting to be
Held tight in the
Embrace of one with
Whom we choose to share
Our life in a relationship if not
Head over heels in love
Than at least heels
Over head.
Though,
I am an
Optimist ever
Persistent hoping
For a storybook ending
Patient in perseverance as
I know if you sit on the porch
Long enough everything
Comes down the road.
Besides, if you do
Choose not to
Run with the
Big dogs
It is
Safer
To stay
On the porch,
Glad I never did.
