Coon

My grandpa
Coal mined and
Farmed in southern
Illinois known as Little
Egypt because of humidity
And heat with hunting small
Game for extra protein which
Included squirrel possum raccoon
And rabbit my favorite and his many
Stories one of which was roasting
A coon over a campfire slicing
Off succulent pieces of meat
As the fat rolled down hand
To elbow and dripped off
A feast of meat salt fat
Best appreciated by
A hungry person
Though of his
Stories my
Favorite
Is when
I was 5
One of
Many
Little
Kids
About
The snake
That slithered
Through the wood
Rail fence into the chicken
House sliding his long arms as a
Snake under our arms around our
Necks as we struggled like chickens
To avoid getting caught then he told
Us how he ran out into the night
With his rifle gun to find the
Snake caught in the rail
Fence unable to make
Its escape due to the
Chicken bulge in its
Middle allowing
Grandpa to
Cut off its
Head and
Save a
Bullet.
