Child III

I am seven
Raised to respect
The property and privacy
Of others when in the second
Grade I become aware that the
Inmates are running the asylum
In a world where adults believe
In their version of the Easter
Bunny and Santa Claus it
Is forbidden to speak a
Truth apparent but not
Accepted that our folk
Tales and religious
Beliefs are not the
Center of the vast
Universe but only
A small piece of
A greater truth
That ethical
Behavior is
Above any
Morals
Of a
Particular
Group since
Morals are what
Someone tells you is
Right or wrong whereas
Ethics is what you know in
Your heart is right or wrong
A transcendentalist perspective
Reinforced by a Presbyterian
Belief in pre-destination so
I only have to worry about
What God has already
Decided about my
Character and
Not what my
Teachers
Think.
And
So I get
To repeat
The second
Grade as I am
Utterly bored with
Dick and Jane and Spot.
I am still that child
Still unimpressed
By authority
Still asking
Questions
Like who
Are you
Really?
