I am 22
Studying
Literature
At UT listening
To my professor talk
About Albee’s plays when
An older female student tells
The professor he is just a “suede-o”
Sophisticate as he is pretentious
And keeps reminding us he is
A Doctor of Philosophy and
An older professor shows
Up in class to mentor the
Doctor so after class I
Am asked by the old
Professor what do I
Think of our class
Talk about Albee
And I reply that,
Looking at the
Doctor, some
Times it can
Take a real
Swine to
Show
You where
The truffles are
Causing the old professor
To burst out laughing and the
Doctor to frown at me but I smile.
Since then I have often found
Myself as a college teacher
Suddenly aware of how
Utterly pretentious I
Must sound in the
Classroom or the
Bedroom and I
Can only stop
And think to
Smile or
Laugh.
