Awake
I awake
In the night
To a chirping
Sound perhaps
A bird but it is too
Early still pitch dark
So I listen to the sound
For tone pattern and notice
It follows the breathing of some
Animal much larger than a bird
With an echo a second after
And as I muse on the beat
I realize it is Harley the
Black doggie woggs
Upstairs and his
Friend the yap
Dog who is a
Companion
In their
Guard
Both
Vigilant
Each day
To bark at
What passes
But nightly they
Do tend to snore.
The sound reassures
Me all is well as the dogs
Are at play in the fields
Of the Lord and I may
Fall back to sleep
After I write a
Poem on
Dogs.
