I arrived in Texas
Age eleven having
Grown up in Louisiana
And near the Mississippi
In southern Illinois so the
New holidays of Texas
Independence Day
And San Jacinto
Day were new
To me I regret
Their current
Eclipse by
Cinco de
Mayo
And Diez y
Seis both an
Effort to appease
Mexican-American
Feelings yet I miss
The old holidays
To celebrate
The defeat
Of Santa
Anna by
All Texans
Fighting for
Liberty from
A dictatorship.
