Late

1989
It’s late
At night a
Knock on our
Front door wakens
Me so I pull on my bath
Robe shuffle to the front
Door open it there is our
Neighbor in tears she is
Tall overweight frumpy
As she tells she hired
A detective to see if
Her husband was
Really staying at
Work evenings
And he is so
Why isn’t
He home
With her
And their
Three kids
But there is
No answer to
Calm her so I say
Maybe business is bad
And he’s concerned but
We both know the real
Reason is he does not
Want to spend time
With his family so
After a bit more
Time nodding
Maybe so ...
She wends
Homeward
Struggling
To grasp
A truth
Too
Painful
To admit
So late at
Night without
A cup of coffee.
