Perimeter

We have taken
Our two teenage
Granddaughters into
The Gila Wilderness,
9,000 feet up in the pines.
It is 3 am and I wake
To check the camp perimeter,
Walk a bit and check
The stars and moon.
The fire is safely still out,
The moon has set,
The Milky Way is a
Diamond bracelet across
The black velvet night,
And I alone am awake
To gaze in awe upon it.
I exhale and see my
Breath in the cold air.
My granddaughters are
Both sound asleep in their tent,
Lindy is snoring softly
In our own tent.
I mark a bit of perimeter,
Crawl back into our tent,
Snuggle into my
Sleeping bag,
And go
To sleep.
