I Know

We are sitting on
A Sunday school
Table in the dark
On a Wednesday,
We walked after school
To her choir practice.
The girls’ choir was swaying
Back and forth,
Side to side singing
“No, No, A thousand times no,
I’ll never do it again,”
I wondered who else she had
Taken to choir practice as
She led me down a half-lit hall
And into a dark classroom.
We were kissing and
Petting when she said,
“I know what you want.”
I thought to myself,
How does she know what
I want when I don’t
Even know what I want?
I was wrong,
She did know what I wanted
Even before I knew.
The lesson I learned,
Other than what I wanted,
Was to listen and
Respond in kind to
Any surprise largess,
It has come in handy
When I needed it most.
A lesson that has never
Got old or worn,
It works as well at 71
As at 18 and the
Appreciation just
Keeps getting better.
A Sunday school lesson,
Do unto others …
