School Nurse
I am a sixth-grader
And large for my age,
Five foot nine inches,
I have been told to
Report to the
School nurse.
She is talking to
Another woman when
I knock and enter.
I have no idea if
I am getting an
Inoculation or what,
She turns her full
Attention on me
And after looking me
In the eye she carefully
Touches my left eye and
Asks if I have been
Crying today.
I look back and reply,
“Not yet.”
She laughs,
Her friend laughs,
And I am stalling
For time to see ahead.
She tells me I have
Some crust on my eye
Lashes and gives
Me a prescription,
I stand and start to leave
When she asks me
How old I am though
She has my file already.
She and her friend
Exchange a glance.
I answer and she tells
Me I can go,
I have always wondered
Why she asked.
Better children
Are unaware
And happy.
I already knew
Odin gave
An eye for
Wisdom,
A bit of
Crust on an
Eyelash
Seemed a
Better
Trade.
