Jacaranda
I am in northern
Mexico near Zacatecas
Standing by the road
Looking at a bright
Blue Jacaranda tree
In full bloom,
Too beautiful to believe.
I gather a few seeds from
The ground and slip
Them into my pocket.
Back in Austin I plant
Them in small pots
On a second floor
Window sill and
Water them each day.
They grow and begin
To shoot up a stalk
And some tiny
Delicate leaves.
One day I return
Late from classes
At UT and find
The summer sun
Has fried them
All beyond recovery.
I still hope one day to
See another Jacaranda
In bloom and gaze
In awe at the beauty
Of blue flowers
On a tree.
