Hu Hu Hu

Outside my window in the
First light of dawn I hear
A soulful bird calling
Hu hu hu time after time,
I heard the call first several
Years ago in Texas and
Wondered what bird of the
Tropics had come so far north.
I now realize it is an owl and
I have a history with owls.
First was Athena’s pet owl
Who gave me knowledge
Of the past and present,
Then came a new kind owl.
I was playing a board game
On the Civil War with several
Friends one evening and walked
Into the dark parking lot to clear
My head and see the stars,
But as I looked up I saw a short
Man with horns standing on top
Of the light pole high in the air
Just above the bright light
Balancing high up staring at me.
I gazed at him and thought this
Cannot be a human being but
Must be a great horned owl
Staring down at me from above.
Just as I was about to turn to
Tell the others to come see the
Owl spread its wings which
Looked seven feet across and
Swooped down then flew away
Into the dark night as I watched.
The owl outside my window this
Morning sounds small and only
A messenger to wake me
From my reveries or sleep
To join and hunt the night’s end.
I am keen to comply and write
This missive in my epistles
On life and love,
So take wing with
Me and read some more.
