Green Chilies
I am 31 sitting in La
Posta a Mexican food
Restaurant in La Mesilla
In New Mexico where Kay
My associate and I have snuck
Off to from doing archeological
Survey work around El Paso
We should never have left
Texas in a state vehicle
But the lure of really
Good Mexican food
Is too strong and
We have been working
Hard for many hours so here
We sit and order our food.
I get enchiladas with green
Chilies because I hope
They are not as hot as the
Red chilies that burn.
Chips and salsa are being prepared fresh and we are both ravenous
To eat when my enchiladas
Arrive and I give Kay a
Big greasy grin as I
Fork one end of my
Enchilada into my
Mouth then feel
The top of my palate burn away
As green chilies was a mistake
And much hotter than I
Expected so as the tears prepare
To rush to my eyes in the seconds
I have before I grab for water
I take Kay’s fork and hand her a
Bite from the other end of
My enchilada for her to enjoy.
Kay and I are not friends
As our bosses are not
On good terms and
Kay would normally
Never eat anything from
My plate but she is
Ravenous for Mexican food
So she accepts my offer
And puts into her mouth,
Her eyes get big as silver dollars
As she turns bright red and glares
At me then my tears blind me
As I grab for water but I
Hear Kay splutter to
Me that she will
Get me for that
But I am laughing
And spluttering
Myself and the chips
And salsa have arrived as
We both dig in and
I even get to
See her smile.
But, she does
Exact payback and
Get me later
As she
Promised.
