Increments
Do we love by increments
Or all at once in a whoosh,
I fell in love with her all
At once like dawn breaks
The desert dark in flash of
Bright light so sudden it is day.
If increments are the brief soft light
Before sunrise or the blink as
The sun jumps into the sky,
Then perhaps love is by increments.
But, I do not think so, love is
Quicker, love is suddenly apparent
To our heart long before our brain
Can decide what has happened.
To fall in love is like hitting a
Baseball, our conscious mind
Cannot do it, we have to swing
Without thinking how, just so
We fall in love not incrementally
By conscious thought but by
Our heart doing it for us.
I found myself in love with her
Long before I made up my mind,
A bit arrogant of us to assume
We control our heart’s desire,
In love our feelings control us.
Love is not a negotiated contract,
Love is a leap of faith based on
Trust that we will work it all out
As we land and each day we
Have together justified the risk.
The heart is the symbol for love,
Not the incrementally dissected
Slices of brain left or right.
We love each other despite our
Conscious brain not because of it.
