IQ
I am nine sitting in
The kitchen of a friend
Of my father’s getting an IQ
Test at their kitchen table as
The man’s four-year-old watches
Me from across the table smiling.
The man asks me to look at the fish in an aquarium on the table though
I have absolutely no interest in the
Fish; however, the small child smiles
At me then rests his head on his
Fists and elbows and stares at
The fish giving me the hint that he
Has done this before, I guess they
Want me to pay attention so I
Mimic the little kid and stare at the
Stupid fish for as long as the guy
Thinks it is appropriate then we
Play pattern recognition which
Is a game I rather enjoy playing.
My father never tells me my score
But decades later after his death
I find the records for Sarah and I
Only to discover she has beat me
By a few points which I think
Makes perfect sense, she is a girl.
Even then at nine I understood
That common sense trumps
Intelligence most of the time,
Highly intelligent people think
They can hit the baseball
By thinking about it.
Same for love,
They over
Think it.
