Horseshoes

I am nine playing
Horseshoes with
Grandpa Mings in
The park in West
Frankfurt as he has
A soft spot for kids.
I lose of course but
Learn some tricks,
How to throw, how
To lose or win with
A bit of grace
And humility.
Grandma calls us
To supper on the
Park picnic tables
Laden with oven
Baked chicken,
Ham, corn on the
Cob, vegetables and
So very many pies.
Adults at one end
Kids at the other end,
Soft white bread loaves
Salt and pepper.
Grandpa looks across
And down the table his
Eyes checking faces
While Grandma keeps
The tables full with eats.
Back then the younger
Daughters had beaus
And new husbands,
I had buttered corn
And Grandpa would
Salt his watermelon
And the exotic treat
Of a cantaloupe.
Iced tea was
Our coolant,
Talk and
Laughter
Our music.
Afterwards was
Swimming in the park pool,
With Grandpa and
Grandma still
Visiting at
The
Picnic
Tables with
The adults.
