Halloween
I am seven dressed
As a pirate tricker
Treating house to house
On my block along with
My sisters under the eye
Of our eldest sister who
Gets to share our candy,
Among the porch lights
Other groups of children
Are across the street and
Down the block all on
A quest for treats to
Take home to show
Our mothers and
Devour without guilt
Or hesitation as only
An innocent child can do.
Milk chocolate, caramel
Nuts in all shapes and
Sizes from candy kisses
To all our favorite
Candy bars plus
Popcorn balls
And strings,
Chewy
Taffy
And
More besides all
Just for the
Asking,
And
The magic words
Trick or treat.
How very
Un-PC
It
Was.
I wonder if
Looking back
At those days long
Ago if today the
Children who
Come to my
Door this
Evening
Will be
As
Bold and
Swagger as we
Did to throw
Down that
Challenge,
Trick or
Treat?
