Chair

I sit in the garden
In a wooden chair
Feeling the warmth
Of the sun on the back
Of my head and neck as
I wonder at the great size
Of the two majestic pine trees
Growing on this verdant hillside.
The bigger pine is three feet across,
The other is half that but both
Are tall enough to be seen
From the street out front
Towering over the house.
The pines have long needles
In clumps with half a dozen
Huge limbs branching out
Midway up the trunk and
Another ring of branches
Again further up with
Many smaller branches
From the trunk everywhere.
They are the sentinels who
Guard Carol’s garden below
And the house which always
Seems cool though the
Windows are almost always
Open summer or winter
As the weather here
Stays moderate
Dry almost all
Of the time.
To my left the house
Rises two stories
With beige stucco
Sides and a red
Tile roof with
White trim.
Carol’s
House but
Our home together.
To my right the pie slice
Shaped yard slopes up to
A point dotted with all sorts of
Trees and plants fruit and
Flowers and most of the
Time a small figure of
A woman bent over
Gardening busy,
I wish she were
Here now but
She has left
For awhile
To visit
Her
Friend
Searching
For answers
That are right here
In the garden
Waiting for
Her to
Return home.
