The Monday morning
Chamber of Commerce
Meeting convenes at my
Cafe talking of building trust
Confidence and community to
Assist the listening small business
Folks who have come to see and
Be seen all nervous as they try
To make a living selling them
Selves on the market while
The old man tells them of
The basic virtues they
Failed to read in the
Fables of Aesop as
Children since we
No longer teach
Civics and
Ethics
To children
Relying on TV
Cartoons to mold
Character so it is no
Wonder these folks are
Desperate for guidance
On how to sell themselves
When they too often do not
Trust their own words which
Is the price of situation ethics,
When we most need to know
What we are doing our poor
Character makes us doubt
Ourselves then hesitate
Which is too often a
Fatal flaw though
If you train to do
Good because
You know it
Will benefit
You by the
Impact on
Society that
You are part
Of then
You
Are forming
Good character
And more often than
Not you will succeed
Despite all your
Weaknesses
Because
You
Are trusted.
