Assimilate

Must we assimilate
To be good Americans,
How much of our cultural
Identity can we preserve and
Still be part of American society?
Can we keep our religion as well
As our faith or hold on to some
Bit of our previous nationality
Or can we be a minority first
And an American second
Or must our first or only
Allegiance be the USA
And how much time
Will we spend here
Until here is where
We are from and
Our past be past
All except for a
Few bits of
DNA from
A past
Long
Forgotten.
If assimilation
Is diversity will our
Unity suffer or
Will we find
Tolerance
And love
Here,
As Lincoln
Foretold.
