Hector

The summer after
I flunked the second
Grade a relative gave
Me a kid’s level narrative of
Homer’s Iliad about the Trojan
War which I found fascinating most
Especially Hector who fought and
Lost to Achilles, the book told
What armor they wore the
Weapons used even the
Strategy and tactics
Of Trojan allies and
Greeks defending
Their ships on
The beach.
I loved to
Read how
Ulysses tricked
The Trojans with
A wooden horse to
Appeal to hubris when
Fighting did not work then
I read Homer’s Ulysses in a
Narrative style then Greek myths
And on to Norse mythology and
On to Gilgamesh and ancient
History which I have read
For the last sixty years
Adding more areas of
Historical interest
Never far from
Military and
Naval wars
Across
Time
And
The globe.
Now at 73 I am
Currently reading
Studying Wellington
Hannibal WW2 in
Italy and the
Oregon
Trail
Happy
I traded up
From Dick
Jane and
Spot
Who
Hectored me.
