Off

I am sitting on a
Gurney, Doc is about
To stitch up a foot wound
But first is debriding the
Wound cutting away
Callus and dead flesh as his
Nurse winces and I lean forward
Taking the small flashlight from
Her saying she has her hands
Full so I can hold the light but
The Doc smiles at me then
Takes the light from me
To hand back to his
Nurse saying to me,
“You are off the
Clock.” So I let
Go sit back
Smile and
Relax as
The Doc is
Right and his
Nurse is puzzled
As to why the Doc
And I find our exchange
So amusing but then you
Kinda had to be there to really
Appreciate the humor when
Things seemed not at all
Funny but as someone
Once said to me,
“Some day’s
Are aces
And
Some days
Are deuces.”
Though, hard
To tell which is
Which when each
Experience is an
Adventure to
Survive and
Overcome.
Stoic ain’t
Most folks
Cup of tea
And I confess
I did enjoy being
Off the clock.
