Christmas
I am a kid at
Christmastime
Happy about presents
Secure in my family present
And elsewhere all sitting
Around their Christmas
Tree and piles of the
Wrapping paper
Even though
We are all
Urged to
Save all
Wrapping
Paper for reuse
Next year a concept
Both optimistic and frugal
But indicative of hopefulness
In our society back in the
1950s before doubts
Clouded out our
Optimism but
Concerned
About the
Batteries
And the
Dreaded
Some assembly
Required which meant
Hours of trying to figure out
Poorly written instructions
Then all laughing at the
Impossibility of putting
The thing together
Amid playing kids
Relaxing parents
And family but
I do not recall
Once from
The late
1940s
Through
The present
Ever joining hands
In prayer because the
Christmastime celebration
Is not a religious ritual but
A joyous embrace of the
Spirit of giving to our
Family and friends
Sharing together
The tradition in
Our culture
Back to
Pre
History
Of a winter
Solstice holiday
Now with Santa Claus
And all the Christmastime
Stories of reindeer snowmen
And even the Grinch whose
Heart grew several sizes
So I urge you to enjoy
Your Christmas in
Your own unique
Way but to also
Remember the
Tree not the
Crèche is
The center
Of attention
At Christmas time.
