Stocking

As a child our
Christmas stocking
Was hung up in hopes
Of all sorts of goodies so
When we woke the first thing
We did was to empty our stocking
To see what Santa had left us
Like an orange a banana a
Coconut with small toys
Like cars and trucks
Submarines ships
Airplanes all tiny
And mixed with
Nuts and a bit
Of chocolate
Or hard rock
Candy all
Dumped
Out on
The
Rug each
Child’s pile
Guarded till
Put away in our
Toy drawer for later
Play over the winter but
As my birthday fell on January
Third I often got the truck cab on
Christmas and the rear of the
Truck on the third which did
Not seem bad to me as I
Was too young to care
Happy with what was
There especially as
Even in January I
Got a piece of
German
Chocolate
Cake with coconut
Icing too delicious for words.
I have since may have
Gotten too big for
My britches but
Never for my
Christmas
Stocking.
