Sing

I am 23
A junior in
College working
Nights in the Audio
Library checking out
Earphones taking requests
For classical and popular music
When I hear a student singing
Loudly unaware everyone in
The room is smiling then
Laughing amused at
The young man’s
Obliviousness
Of his loud
Singing
Until
I gently
Nudge his
Shoulder telling
Him what he is doing
Which stops his singing
But the silence is not near as
Amusing as his enthusiasm
As I watch the silent rows
Of chairs and students
All silent dark night
Outside windows
But after a few
Minutes other
Students
Begin to
Sing
Out loud
Then others
Chime in and I
Decide as long as
No one complains
The new policy of the
Audio Library when I am
On duty is to embrace the
Cacophony rather than the
Silence cold on a chilly night.
