Dark

I slip into
The dark as
Into water stars
Guide me on an inky
Night no inconstant
Moon’s reflected light,
I slip through the trees
Avoiding brasada thorns
Walking silently onto grass
Prairie across shadows then
Over wood under wire fences
Staring south imagining the cone
Of the Peloncillo hill miles away on
The Dimmit Webb county line now
Black under starlight marking I
Know not what unnatural
Thing from long ago too
Far to reach in the dark
But never far from my
Thoughts too unique
To forget then the
Soft fingers of a
Night breeze
Stops me
So I turn
Back to
The
Ranch.
Tomorrow
I will check out
The Valenzuela site
On San Roque Creek
Where cattle were penned
Next to the Rancho fortress
I am here to make a report about.
Historical archeology will be my
First job after research here
And there later plotting all
The archeological sites
In Texas before a job
Making maps and
Forecasting for
TXDOT while
I taught at
College
Nights
Dark
As
Memory
Guided by
My students
Like stars across
A night sky in Texas.
