Pin Money
As a child
I heard adults
Speak of pin money
Which was a woman’s
Cash reserve in case of
Some emergency and realized
It was a euphemism for woman’s
Mad money to be spent as they
Felt best uncontrolled by their
Husbands who always felt
They knew best but didn’t
So pin money was sewing
Money to buy pins used
To pin a paper dress
Pattern to a piece
Of cloth to cut
Then sew into
A dress or a
Garment
Hence
Pin money
But really for a
Woman’s discretionary
Funding of what she felt best.
Today woman’s economic
Equality makes pin
Money seem old
Fashioned but
A little cash
Is always
Nice.
And, I do
Remember
My elder sisters
Pinning paper patterns
To cloth when not
Pinning me to
The floor or
Chair and
Tickling
My
Nose
With a
Feather.
Miss Ms or
Mrs. Mings they
All deserve pin money.
