Trench

I am 19 the
First time I meet
Paul Trench and his
Wife the parents of the
First husband of the woman
With whom I live having become
The father of her two sons five
And two, their natural father
Does not write nor support
Them after a year or so
Yet I become friends in
A polite British sense
With Paul and his
Wife. He is an
English news
Paper man
Working
In San
Antonio,
His wife the
Granddaughter
Of Sam Maverick
And a patron of the
Arts in painting yet this
Couple are my sons’ grand
Parents so we develop a formal
Friendship so the boys may be
A part of their lives and after
We marry a third son allows
Me to adopt my first two
So all three will have
The same name a
Burden for the
Trenchs but
One
Gracefully
Accepted by
Them as the three
Boys grow up brothers
With the same last name
All treated equally raised to
Have good character and
I tell them how Grandpa
Trench served in the
British merchant
Marine in WW2
And how Mrs.
Trench’s
Mother
Mary
Maverick
Made a tin
Angel for the
Christmas tree
As a girl that was
On our tree each year
Blending grandparents
And family names though
I do regret changing my two
Eldest son’s names from
Maverick and Maury
But I was young
And ignorant
A condition
I’ve since
Halfway
Fixed as
I am
74.
