1953 or so
Christmastime
Hanging stockings
Christmas Eve over a
Symbolic fireplace the
Stockings are socks except
For one of my sisters who hangs
Up and old nylon stocking our
Mother threw away so on
Christmas morning we
Find in the nylon
Stocking not
So much
Candy
Oranges
Bananas
Popcorn balls
Carmeled apples
As at the bottom a
Large rough pineapple.
Future stockings were
Limited to our regular
Socks or store type
Red stockings too
Boring but they
Did hold more
So extra fruit
Filled them
Searching
For sweet
Candy
Caramels
Chocolate
Peanuts and
Popcorn balls
Our supply base
For waiting while
Presents were ever
So slowly passed out
Each child urged to save
The wrapping paper for next
Year then we retreated with our
Loot to consider each item in
Order of appeal to a child’s
Mind toys ranked top a
Book next and socks
Clothes next last
Being framed
Photos of
Folks too
Cheap
To buy us
A present or
Worse delusional
About their own photo’s
Value to a child at Christmas.
Most important in hindsight
Was the shared memories
Of waking up Christmas
Morning eager to see
What was under the
Tree enjoying the
Holiday happy
As a kid at
Xmas.
