I am fortyish
In the Gila wilderness
Standing by the river at midnight
Staring up at the Milky Way
Galaxy like a diamond
Bracelet of stars
Across the
Sky
Amazed
At the grandeur
Never seen where lights
Block out most stars but here
I can see how humans have
Seen the night sky for
Most of our time
On earth and
Unless you
See it no
One
Really can
Understand our
Place among the stars.
Then I water a tree
Trunk climb into
My sleeping
Bag fall
Back
To sleep.
But now I know.
