Truth

Truth is truth,
Isn’t it?
I would ask my
Students if all
Truths are relative
To one’s perspective,
A concept some rejected
With moral outrage.
First class night I formed
Them into a horseshoe,
Tossed a box with a
Pi sign on top and
Two letters and two
Numbers on each side
Into the horseshoe.
I asked them to consider
Box as ultimate truth
On any topic,
Slavery, women’s rights …
And made the horseshoe
Time over two thousand
Years asking for two views,
They did not match and so
I asked isn’t truth truth?
Or, is it based on perspective?
Next we tried by races,
Then age,
Then ethnicities,
Then gender and so on,
Most replied truth is
Relative to perspective,
I warned them that is
What I want you to think
But you may want a few
Absolute truths to hang
Onto like a steep stairway
Bannister through life.
Either way is fine as
Long as they could
Admit truth might
Have more than
Just one facet
To reflect
The
Light
We call
Life or conversely
The shadows on
The wall of our
Cave which
We see as
Real
Absolute
Truth.
God
Grant you
Are never asked
To determine truth
On a cloudy day.
